I was inspired by Andy Warhol to create my project. I used Adobe illustrator as my medium to create this piece. I love using illustrator and it’s a software that is handy with a lot of material in hand. I was planning on painting on a canvas, but I am very clumsy when it comes to painting and I wanted this to be clean and have the very same feeling that most of Warhol’s work gave with its printed look. I went with a flat illustration of myself, at first, the idea was to make the background similar to Kehinde Wiley’s signature flowers but I wasn’t convinced with the way it looked so I decided to go with the route of a magazine cover. I instantly enjoyed the way it was starting to develop and I added some of my favorite quotes throughout our readings as text that is usually seen on a magazine cover. One of the reasons I thought of revolving my piece around the cover of a magazine is the idea that magazines are typically forms of media that create narratives for the public. They are also a form of advertising fashion and any celebrity news that they find interesting to publish. Magazines whether they’re published online or are physical copies are directed to us, the public. As so they’re in power to direct our attention to anything they want us to see whether it be a certain fashion trend they are recommending us to take, diet tips, and or just the insight of celebrity’s lives. Regardless it’s a form of getting our attention and in many cases follow the trends they’re suggesting. Magazines especially tend to use the cover page as the main factor to grasp our attention with the use of a beautiful photograph of an individual. This just goes on to point out the social concerns of how images and appearances are a social pressure that we find ‘normal’ when it’s not.
