The following flag seen above was created to reflect and symbolize my true passions: art and chemistry. Despite their differences, chemistry is art. It is used to express a scientist’s creative skill and imagination to be treasured for its ability to improve human life. This can be accomplished through the creation of everyday essential items such as medicines, foods/snacks, hair and skincare items, and entertainment items.
Each image drawn and painted on the flag represents the following:
1. Gold Beaker à The size and gold lining around the beaker symbolizes my great love for chemistry.
2. Splashes of Paint (on each corner) à The creative/artistic side that “splashes” into my chemistry side.
3. Chemical structures/instruments/equipmentà They fill most of the flag to show how my passion for chemistry is greater than art.
4. Palette and Paintbrushà It was placed within the beaker to represent how I have a hidden talent/hobby, which is to paint.
This flag was inspired by Dahlia Elsayed, a New York painter and writer whose work emphasizes the correlation between symbols and words. In the art review, “Painting With Words, Writing With Color,” Dahlia emphasizes that for her “the language becomes the artwork.” In other words, art can speak in a specific “language” or way to express different ideas and emotions. Ultimately, this quote can be seen throughout her artworks depicted in this review such as “Mess Wreck” and “July Brought Smoke and Mirrors.” In correlation with Dahlia’s flags, “the language” of my flag should tell the viewer how my artistic side dwells within my scientific side. Also, despite my deep passion for chemistry, the flag should highlight how my artistic side continues to reveal itself.
