The 6 sides! - Jennifer A

First my idea revolved around Andy Warhol's work and Frida's work. I wanted to plan to dress as Frida like wearing the Mexican dresses she has in her artworks and to take pictures of different postures, poses and different angle while dancing. then wanted to edit it as a collage with different colors light to dark. Due to the weather and my condition I wasn't able to go outside to buy the dress nor dance in the open field which is located a nearby park close to my house. I decided to do a pic collage of selfies of myself in different outfit, hairdo and postures but with a serious look. The inspiration I followed was Sophie Calle and Amy Sherald. The reason why I chose these two artist is that with Sophie Calle photographs are very unique and looks solitary. An example below she takes pictures of the face with different angle or a movements but each pictures shows a sadness as said in one of her articles, "These are not souvenir snapshots of a presence, but rather shots of an absence, the absence of the followed, that of the follower, and that of their reciprocal absence" In my pictures I'm dressed differently but with a serious face but there still a missing factor is my smile. For me its give me a sense of sadness that none of my pictures are smiling like being home in this covid situation how we are all trap inside but we can enjoy ourselves. Another inspiration was Amy Sherald where she doesn't distinguish color and uses a full on color background. How I can up with my project with these inspirations is that I tried to show different personalities of myself. First the sporty person I am because I played tennis and soccer when I was younger. Second is me in my casual wear for summer, love wearing tank tops. Third is how I dress as a kid sometimes when my mom brushes my hair in ponytails or braids. Fourth is my special moments when I enjoy my loose hair and dresses. The fifth is when I have to dress professionally or "pretty" to go outside. The fifth is my everyday look at home. The most important factor of all these is that each panel looks differently but they are all me. Who I am as a person. In the specter it states, "So long as the realm of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity. The spectacle is the bad dream of modem society in chains, expressing nothing more than its wish for sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of that sleep." The spectacle judge people by their skin color, physical look but this sense of reaching perfection or being what society expect you to be is all a false hope. We should remember who we are and should not convince ourselves we are different people cause of they way we dress or look. The reason I chose Amy Sherald was the because she used the gray scale drawing so it does not represent discrimination and let their fashion styles and who they are express the beauty with in them. It is funny how I had different styles of looks and had to search my wardrobe trying to find the perfect shirt and hairdo for each panel/occasion. I enjoyed doing this project because I played around with the filter of the phones and it was fun to play dress up.
