This is Me! ~ Luzangela Martinez

" "Every advertisement is a mystery."

"Advertisements create communities of like-minded individuals."

"Mirrors and reflections are instruments that can be used to support the concept of self"

" The 'real' body is an obdurate reality that resists the promise of fashion."

Representation is the portrayal of an object, person or thing in a specific way. Often, representation is exceptionally important in art and media images. Through representation, different messages can be conveyed to the audience. As Susan Sontag, “[t]o collect photographs is to collect the world” (On Photography). In other words, photographs represent specific parts of the world whether its nature, people or creatures. They can also address specific issues that are happening around the world such as world hunger, racial issues, climate changes, and political unrest. For example, Amy Sherald painted a Brenna Taylor portrait, an African American woman who was fatally shot and killed by police officers during a raid on her apartment. In her portrait, Taylor represents the racial problems experienced by the African Americans that still exist in the United States. As you can see, representation in art and media images are strictly important because “[e]veryone can relate to this work…..[whether it’s] black women, white women, Asian women” or men (Revisiting Carrie Mae Weems’s Landmark “Kitchen Table Series”). In the following portraits, I tried to represent my identity by utilizing the idea of representation. In the selfie inspired by Kehinde Wiley, I tried to convey the message that I may appear as a serious person at first, however, deep down inside there is a colorful, bright side to my personality. This was done by using the bright flower background drawn by the artist. Moreover, in the selfie inspired by Amy Sherald, I tried display a similar message. However, I tried to place the red color in the background to highlight my bright and warm personality.
