"Art materializes the imagination; it turns objects into surfaces that can be overwritten by the imagination. Advertising achieves the same."
"This difficult relationship between the object and ourselves is a distinctive characteristic of modern subjectivity. We live with the knowledge of a discontinuity between the inside and outside. How we think and feel does not easily correspond to the nature of the external world, yet paradoxically we understand ourselves through contact and continuity with the outside, with others."
"The importance of fashion cannot be underestimated as an influence on the everyday world we inhabit. Towards the end of the 1870s, two Americans in Paris ‘anxious to make their mark’ were both enjoying some degree of personal celebrity"
"Fashion is also a process that transforms the mundane activities of everyday life into more elaborate and complex aesthetic experiences by altering the emotional investment surrounding the display. When we come to see ourselves through the eyes of others, to evaluate our lifestyle and possessions in relative terms and in comparison with prevailing fashions, then a new level of significance is added to our social experiences. We become self-consciously aware of the other’s importance in defining our own identity"
There are many different things that really impact the art society but the one that I will focus on is the media images/art. Two artist Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald are two African American who express identity and culture of the African Americans. Kehinde Wiley express and show the non powerful people into bright and strong while Amy Sherald shows the confidence and the fashionable African Americans that she picks up from the streets. They both contribute the essences of a true African American. They are people who express the true identity of African American because they are part of that ethnicity. They are the true artist that should represent all the African Americans. It is important who makes the images because they have experience and share this connection with their own people. In my opinion I would want someone hispanic or an American to draw my own portrait or have them both work together to draw my portrait. Why? The perfect artist would be someone who can portray the perfect image of your identity is the people who have gone through the same experience, beliefs and maybe the same feelings toward the life they live through being a hispanic, African American, Indian and other race. An artwork has to demonstrate feeling and emotions and these artist express these emotion in beautiful, extravagant and touching colors that express the true identity of a true African American and no one can oppose because they have the credibility to represent their own culture.
