SELF-PORTRAIT FINAL PROJECT

*Please post to the blog by 12/8

Choosing any one or combination of processes that you have explored during the semester, create a self-portrait. Connect your final self-portrait project to one (or more) of the artists and the readings we learned in class. You may also choose another artist we have not covered in class. You may also incorporate and be inspired by the the spectacle, media, advertising and technology in the exploration and presentation of self. You may use a medium you have used before but push yourself deeper and ambitiously on your final portrait! Research the artist(s) that inspires you and take time to develop a more ambitious idea inspired by this research.

In addition to completing your self-portrait project you will photograph and post your project to the blog. Through an oral presentation (5 minutes) and a written post which includes images of your work, please explain your project. Answer these questions:

• What is the subject and content of your project?

• Why did you choose this medium and make the choices that led to the composition? How you would categorize your work (ex. collage, graphic print, mixed media, etc).

• Explain the process and steps you went through and why you made those decisions.

• What artist(s) inspired or informed your project?

• What do you think this self portrait conveys to the audience/viewers?

• What are the differences between your first self-portraits (3) and this self-portrait (final)?

• What influenced these changes? Have you pushed yourself and learned from the artists we discussed? How?

• How does the media and its images influence identity and self presentation? Reference the spectacle if applicable.

WRITING THE POST

*Give your project a title

*Take several good images of your project and post them. If digital: make sure video is working correctly, images appear well formatted.

*Short project description: connect to your artist(s) and to class readings and answer the above questions.

You must document the project and post one or more well lit and edited image(s) of your project to the blog along with a written assignment answering the above questions. The writing portion should be 500+ words and explain your process, your inspirations and influences and answer the questions above. You must also connect your explanation to the class readings. Incorporate at least 3 of the quotes you have been collecting from the readings each week. Be sure to cite the quotations and include those references at the bottom of your post.

What is the spectacle?

Please choose 4 quotes from the Guy Debord reading, Society of the Spectacle, and explain them. Number the quote and write out your explanation of each. This can be highly theoretical. Do your best to analyze the writing. How do these theories connect to our present global pandemic? What you think it means is important! Use your journal writing to connect to your own experience. Then reference some of the artists we have learned or other artists from the exhibitions we have seen. Connect at least 2 of these quotes about the spectacle to some of the themes from Berger and Finkelstein by citing some of the quotes from those past readings as well.

~600 words, 4 quotes from Debord, 2 additional quotes from our class readings and 4 images with captions

+++Weekly Selfie to be included in your Short essay assignment. Inspired by any artist you choose - one from our class or otherwise- create a digital self portrait that also illustrates one of your selected quote from the Society of the Spectacle reading. Include the selfie you create in the short essay as an illustration of your explanation and analysis of the concept of the spectacle and its effect on us today.

BEGIN TO WORK OUT IDEAS FOR YOUR FINAL PROJECTS. In the online session next week I will ask you to share ideas, materials and works in progress for your final self portrait project. Read the description of the final assignment below. Remember to push yourself further this time in concept and in medium and style. Think about the artist or process that inspires your project. SELF PORTRAIT PROJECT COLLAGE/DRAWING/PAINTING

Drawing inspiration from the artists we have learned: Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Amy Sherald, Kehinde Wiley and Wangechi Mutu (as well as others you find or know) design and create a self portrait project using drawing, painting and collage techniques. Be sure to push yourselves and incorporate new materials and methods you may not have used before. Draw on the works of the artists to push yourself to create a work of self-portraiture that addresses advertising, media and fashion, as well as fine art examples. please use any materials you have access to or consider getting new materials you have not used (acrylic paint and canvas for example.) *If physical art materials are not a possibility for you to acquire please reach out to me.

Photograph and post your project to the blog. Be sure to take clear images of your project. Give your project a title and explain the materials you used and your process for making it.

In a short piece of writing share 4 quotes from the readings and 2+images of works that have inspired your project. How does your project address the themes we have been discussing? How do advertising, fashion and media play a role in identity and cultural and societal norms? How do these influence our view of ourselves and each other? Review the documentaries on the lives and work of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. What are some prevalent themes in each of their work? What influence may their biographies have on their works? How did their lived experience and their self identities influence the way they made art, the subjects of their work and their own presence in their works (self portraits)? Did these artists become synonymous with their work? How did media and fame play a role in their work and their lives? How did each of the artists use art materials and technique to address some of these themes? How were the materials and techniques themselves important to the subjects they depicted?

Did these artists invent themselves or their public selves through the presentation of these works? Use Berger, Finkelstein and any other additional sources to help you answer these questions. You must cite at least 4 references (quotes) from our class readings in your essay.

SELF PORTRAIT PERFORMANCE due 10/21 (10%credit)
In a short video or series of photographs create a performance that addresses a socio-political issue of your choice. Consider many of the themes and issues we have discussed about identity, gender, race and equality, art history, voting, the government, power structures and many more in your planning.

In a short essay please explain how this performance addresses the issue(s) you chose and how it connects to the artists and themes we learned. Use the readings we have done to help this explanation. Reference at least 3 of your quotes from the readings. Think about the questions we answered in class as well as: How can a performance express self-identity and issues that affect that self-identity? How does performance go beyond other methods of representation like photographs and paintings?

Remember that a self-portrait does not represent an entire life but just a part. Push yourself into the space of performance, conceptual art and representation. Look to the artists we have reviewed as well as others you may know or discover. Get creative!

Weekly Selfie: Reclaiming the Gaze Choose one of the artists Ana Mendieta or Mickalene Thomas to create a selfie that addresses the male gaze or challenges it in some way. Although the artists are addressing the representation of the female nude in their work, this assignment does not require this investigation. Both of the artists allude to the nude and the representation of the body without using the nude. I will be visiting the Dahlia Elsayed exhibition at Lemmerman Gallery on the 3rd floor of Hepburn Hall (RM323) on Thursday Sept 17 at 12:30pm. You are invited to join me but this is NOT MANDATORY. Please wear a mask and be safe!

FLAG SELF PORTRAIT due 9/23 (10% credit)

Using the work of Dahlia Elsayed and our class readings as inspiration please design and create a "flag" self portrait. Choose an issue or theme that speaks to your identity, passions, wishes. Think about this project more abstractly and conceptually than a traditional flag. Simplify and push yourself to think about identity as symbols and language instead of figure or image. How can you create a flag that speaks to some part of you?

Use paper, fabric or digital tools to design and create the flag. Share the flag on the class blog. Prepare a short piece of writing to explain the flag to the class. The writing can be a poem or instructions, or a short explanation of the various components and ideas behind the flag.

Look back at the two articles and watch Dahlia's artist talk to help fuel your ideas. I want you to use the work of Dahlia Elsayed as inspiration but it does not need to be in her style.

+++SOME TIPS if you are having trouble getting started or narrowing down your ideas:

-Go back to the quotes you chose from the readings, see what sticks out and if there is a connection to an issue or theme for you personally

-You can also use the exercise I mentioned in class and write down 5 words that come to mind about yourself or 5 current issues that are important to you. Play with this brainstorm list and write phrases, short poems and see what pops out.

-Gather materials in your home that can be used to draw, paint or collage your design. You can use an old towel, pillowcase or fabric, large paper or cardboard, wood or plastic. If you do not have paint, cut fabric or paper to use as collage, use markers and pens, use other ways of making marks like dye or food coloring. Look around and see what inspires you.

-Play around and see what you can create. You should make something physical. Take a photo of the object to share on the blog with the short piece of writing. You can "perform" with the flag or include only a photo of the flag itself. The flag can be temporary.

-Be creative! Go outside of your comfort zone.
