“When Artists Create Flags - Artworks of Creative Time’s Pledges of Allegiance Project”
- Pedro Reyes – Hands On With a Vision, 2017: “Through a varied practice, Pedro Reyes addresses current social and political issues, especially exploring the power of individual and collective organization to incite change. His flag refers to the flag of the People’s United Nations, an experimental conference that applies tools and resources from social psychology, theater, art, and conflict resolution to geopolitics. The imagery of Reyes' flag signals our mission to protect the planet.”
- Trevor Paglen - Weeping Angel, 2017: “Though a practice spanning various media, Trevor Paglen focuses on the historical moment we live in and develops the means to imagine alternative futures. His flag enhances our visual vocabulary on the issue of the surveillance state. Depicting a weeping angel surrounded by code, he refers to a hacking tool developed by CIA to spy on citizens.”
“Painting With Words, Writing With Color”
- “‘I’ve always been a writer. The written word always comes first when I’m doing a painting,’ Ms. Elsayed, 44, of Palisades Park, said during a recent walk-through of the exhibition, which runs through Feb. 2. ‘For me, the language becomes the artwork.’”
- “‘What’s great about Dahlia is that if you look at the earliest work, from the early 2000s, and the last paintings she’s done just this year, you see the same hand there,’ said Ms. O’Reilly, 51, of Lawrenceville. That hand is characterized not only through words but also by representations of Ms. Elsayed’s movement through life.”
