  • “Sometimes when the water goes down, it looks like a lunar landscape,” she said. “This is my way of marking the experience, something I see over and over again in my daily life” — specifically, during her commute from her home to her studio in Newark. “You see things sometimes in New Jersey that are just so beautiful.”

  • That’s such a real feeling, and something we don’t often see in a work of art,” Ms. Elsayed said. “We see the prizewinning piece” — not the nagging insecurities that may have accompanied its creation.
